Where to Stay in Cascais 2026: The Complete Neighbourhood Guide

June 7, 2026
Which part of Cascais suits your trip, the beaches and transport for each, and where to base yourself, from a team that lives and works here.

Cascais is small enough to feel like one place and varied enough that the area you pick changes your whole stay. The short answer our team gives most guests: base in the town centre for walkability and nightlife, Monte Estoril or Estoril for a calmer seafront, Sao Joao do Estoril and Sao Pedro for quiet family beaches, or Guincho and Quinta da Marinha for space, nature, and surf. This guide walks through each area, the beaches and transport for it, and who it suits, so you arrive in the right spot.

Booking note: Cascais is on the train line from Lisbon (Cais do Sodre to Cascais, about 40 minutes along the coast), so you can stay here and day-trip into the city easily. Summer and the June festival weeks book out first, so reserve 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August.

Disclaimer. Area character, beaches, and transport can change with the season. Details below were compiled in 2026.

How to choose your area

Decide first on the kind of stay. If you want restaurants, bars, and the marina on your doorstep, the town centre. If you want a quieter seafront with grand old hotels, Estoril. For sheltered family beaches and a residential feel, Sao Joao and Sao Pedro. For nature, surf, and villa space, Guincho and Quinta da Marinha. Every area is a short drive or train ride from the others, so you are never far from anything.

Cascais town centre

The heart of Cascais: the old town, the marina, the fish market, and the cluster of small town beaches (Praia da Conceicao, Praia da Duquesa, Praia da Rainha) all within a short walk. Best for couples and first-time visitors who want everything on foot and a lively evening scene. A short walk from Cascais station.

Monte Estoril and Estoril

One stop before Cascais, Estoril is the grand old resort: the casino, the gardens, and the wide Tamariz beach with its seawater pool. Monte Estoril, the slope between Estoril and Cascais, has elegant apartments with sea views and an easy walk down to the front. Best for a calmer, more refined seafront base that is still minutes from the town.

Sao Joao do Estoril and Sao Pedro

Two stops east, these quieter residential neighbourhoods have sheltered town beaches and a local, unhurried feel, with the train into the centre or Lisbon at the door. Best for families and longer stays that want calm and value without losing the coast or the connection.

Guincho and Quinta da Marinha

North and west of the town, toward the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, this is the green, open side of Cascais: pine forest, golf, the dramatic windswept Guincho beach, and larger villas with space. You will want a car here, but you get nature and surf in exchange. Best for families, groups, and anyone after a villa with room to breathe.

Getting to Lisbon and the coast

The Cascais train line runs from Cais do Sodre in Lisbon along the coast to Cascais, every 20 minutes, about 40 minutes end to end, stopping at Carcavelos, the Estorils, and Sao Joao on the way. It is the easiest way to combine a Cascais base with Lisbon days and beach-hopping, no car needed unless you are staying out toward Guincho.

Where to stay FAQs

Which part of Cascais is best to stay in?

The town centre for walkability, nightlife, and the small town beaches. Estoril and Monte Estoril for a calmer, grander seafront. Sao Joao do Estoril and Sao Pedro for quiet family beaches. Guincho and Quinta da Marinha for nature, surf, and villa space.

Is Cascais a good base for visiting Lisbon?

Yes. The Cascais train line reaches central Lisbon (Cais do Sodre) in about 40 minutes, running every 20 minutes along the coast, so a Cascais base gives you beaches plus easy city days.

Do I need a car in Cascais?

Not if you stay in the town centre or along the train line (Estoril, Sao Joao). You will want a car if you base out toward Guincho and Quinta da Marinha, which are away from the station.

When should I book accommodation in Cascais for summer?

Reserve 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August, and earlier for the June festival weeks, when the whole coast is busiest.
