FIESA 2026: Portugal's International Sand Sculpture Festival in the Algarve
The world's largest sand sculpture event, in Pêra near Albufeira. What to expect, when to go, and where to stay, from our Algarve team.
FIESA, the Festival Internacional de Escultura em Areia, is the single best family day out in the central Algarve, and the most common question we get from guests is "is it worth the drive?" The short answer is yes, especially at night in summer. Held in Pêra, a short hop from Albufeira and Armação de Pêra, FIESA is the largest sand sculpture festival in the world by volume of sand, with monumental themed sculptures spread across an open-air park. The guide below covers the season, the best time of day to visit, ticket basics, and how to fit it into an Algarve beach week.
Booking note: FIESA runs for several months across spring, summer, and into autumn, and stays open into the evening in high season. Summer night visits, when the sculptures are illuminated, are the highlight and the busiest. If you are basing in the Algarve for a beach week, a weekday evening visit beats a weekend afternoon in the heat.
Disclaimer. FIESA dates, themes, opening hours, and ticket prices change each year. Details below were compiled in June 2026 and are indicative. Always confirm the current season and prices on the official FIESA website before travelling.

What FIESA is
FIESA is an open-air park in Pêra, in the Silves municipality, filled with large-scale sculptures carved entirely from sand. Each year follows a theme, with sculptures grouped into zones, and the scale is what surprises first-time visitors: many pieces stand several metres tall. It is widely described as the biggest event of its kind in the world by the quantity of sand used. The park also runs workshops and, in summer, evening programming with the sculptures lit after dark.
When to go and opening season
FIESA is not a single weekend. It opens in spring and runs through the summer into autumn, which makes it one of the few major Algarve attractions you can plan around for almost any warm-season trip. Within that window:
- Late spring (May to June): comfortable daytime temperatures, smaller crowds, sculptures freshly completed.
- High summer (July to August): the night-visit season, illuminated sculptures, busiest period, hottest by day.
- Early autumn (September to October): warm evenings, thinning crowds, an easy add-on to a late-season beach trip.
Always check the official site for the exact opening and closing dates of the current edition before you plan.
Day visit or night visit?
In spring and autumn, a late-afternoon visit gives you good light for photos without the midday heat. In July and August, go after sunset: the illuminated sculptures are the signature FIESA experience and the temperature is far more comfortable for walking the park with children. The park is largely open and exposed, so daytime summer visits mean sun and little shade.
Tickets and what to expect
Tickets are sold at the gate and, in most years, online. Expect a standard adult ticket in the low double digits in euros, with reduced prices for children and seniors and free entry for the youngest children. Allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours to walk the full park at a relaxed pace. There is on-site parking, a cafe area, and workshop space. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water in summer.
Getting there and where to stay
FIESA is in Pêra, roughly:
- 15 minutes from Albufeira
- 10 minutes from Armação de Pêra
- 35 to 40 minutes from Faro airport
- 5 minutes from the beach at Praia Grande and the Salgados lagoon
The central Algarve is the natural base. Armação de Pêra and Albufeira put you within a short drive of the park and a long list of beaches. For a quieter beach-week base with the festival on the doorstep, browse our Algarve properties.
Make it a full Algarve day
Pair FIESA with the nearby coast for a complete day:
- Morning: Praia Grande de Pêra or the Salgados boardwalk and lagoon birdwatching.
- Afternoon: lunch in Armação de Pêra, then the beach during the hottest hours.
- Evening: FIESA after sunset for the illuminated sculptures.
