Best Beaches near Lisbon and Cascais: Summer 2026 Guide

June 7, 2026
The town beaches, surf strands, and hidden coves our Cascais team sends guests to, with how to reach each one by train and where to base yourself.

The Lisbon coast packs an unusual range of beaches into a short stretch: calm family bays in Cascais, the surf at Guincho, golden town beaches along the Estoril line, and wild Atlantic coves under the Sintra cliffs, all reachable on a single train line. The most common question we get is "which beach should I actually go to?" and the honest answer depends on whether you want calm water, surf, or solitude. The guide below is the one our Cascais-based team hands to guests, grouped by what you are after, with the nearest train station for each.

Booking note: the Cascais line (Cais do Sodré to Cascais) is the single best way to beach-hop without a car, and it runs along the coast the whole way. In July and August the town beaches fill by late morning, so arrive before 11am or go late afternoon. For Guincho and the Sintra coast you will want a car or taxi.

Disclaimer. Beach access, flag status, and facilities change with the season and the weather. Always check local conditions and lifeguard flags on the day. Details below were compiled in June 2026.

Best for families and calm water

Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa (Cascais) - twin town beaches a short walk from Cascais station, sheltered, shallow, and lined with cafes. The easiest family beach on the line.

Praia da Rainha (Cascais) - a tiny, picturesque cove tucked into the cliffs in the centre of town. Beautiful at low tide, small at high tide.

Praia do Tamariz (Estoril) - a wide golden beach directly in front of Estoril station, with a sea-water pool and plenty of facilities.

Praia de Carcavelos - the largest beach on the line and the closest to Lisbon, with a long strand, surf schools, and a lively summer scene. Good for families in the morning, busier and younger by afternoon.

Best for surf and wind

Praia do Guincho - the dramatic, windswept Atlantic beach under the Sintra hills, a world-class spot for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. Strong currents and wind make it one for confident swimmers and surfers, not young children. A 10-minute drive from Cascais.

Praia de Carcavelos - the most reliable beginner surf on the line, with several established surf schools running summer lessons.

Highlights

  • Guincho is for surfers and the dramatic scenery; afternoon wind is strong, so go early to swim.
  • Carcavelos is the best place to take a first surf lesson near Lisbon.

Best wild and scenic beaches

Praia da Ursa (Sintra coast) - one of the most spectacular beaches in Portugal, reached by a steep cliff path near Cabo da Roca. No facilities, no lifeguards, and not for young children, but unforgettable.

Praia da Adraga and Praia Grande (Sintra) - broad Atlantic beaches under the Sintra cliffs, with cafes and dramatic surf. Praia Grande is a reliable surf beach with parking.

Arrábida coves (Setúbal) - Galápos, Figueirinha, and Portinho da Arrábida have the clearest, calmest water near Lisbon, on the sheltered south-facing coast 45 minutes from the city. Summer access is capped, so arrive early or take a tour.

Best beaches you can reach by train

The Cascais line from Cais do Sodré is the car-free beach route. Key stops, in order from Lisbon:

  • Carcavelos - biggest beach, surf schools, closest to Lisbon.
  • São Pedro and São João do Estoril - quieter town beaches, good for a calmer day.
  • Estoril (Tamariz) - wide beach with facilities, in front of the station.
  • Cascais (Conceição, Duquesa, Rainha) - the end of the line, the prettiest cluster of town beaches.

Trains run every 20 minutes and the ride from Cais do Sodré to Cascais takes about 40 minutes along the water.

Beach day tips for summer

  • Arrive before 11am or after 4pm in July and August to beat the crowds and the strongest sun.
  • Watch the lifeguard flags: green is safe, yellow means caution, red means no swimming. The Atlantic has strong currents.
  • The water on this coast is cold even in summer, colder than the Algarve. Arrábida and the sheltered town coves are the warmest options.
  • For the wild Sintra beaches and Arrábida, bring everything with you: most have no shops or cafes.
